I’ll let you in on a little secret…
7 years ago, I had a successful job, good income & built my own house. But behind closed doors, I couldn’t get out of bed most days. I was not on one or two medications.. but FIVE different anti-depressants and anti-anxiety medications at one time. I was numb & broken. My life completely wrapped around my job & taking care of others, I forgot how to take care of myself. One day, someone asked me “do you do anything that you truly enjoy?” I had to think about it but I finally did come up with an answer & it was... going to the spa & going to bible study.
Two simple tasks, two simple reasons to get me out of bed yet these two reasons changed my entire life.
When I started going to the spa, my esthetician taught me how to take care of my skin (&myself) & most importantly how to love the skin I was in. This is when I realized that caregiving doesn’t always have to be in a hospital, nursing home or medical setting. This esthetician was taking care of me when I wasn’t taking care of myself.. I have a passion for caring for others but that didn’t mean it had to be all or nothing. I can still take care of others in the spa.
Bible study... is where I fell in love with life, God and my purpose. I was raised Catholic but I never had a relationship with God. When I started my relationship with Him, I found so much love & comfort. I’m incredibly proud to say I’m currently on no medications. Some days are harder than others but they are few and far in between.
Whoever needs to hear this, don’t give up. Don’t compare yourself to others. Trust the timing of your life. You can’t see the promises of tomorrow with the pains of yesterday. If you’re not happy with your life, I pray you have courage to make that change.
It’s not selfish to love yourself. If you can’t put yourself first in the real world, I can put you first in the treatment room.
“For what it’s worth: it’s never too late or, in my case, too early to be whoever you want to be. There’s no time limit, stop whenever you want. You can change or stay the same, there are no rules to this thing. We can make the best or the worst of it. I hope you make the best of it. And I hope you see things that startle you. I hope you feel things you never felt before. I hope you meet people with a different point of view. I hope you live a life you’re proud of. If you find that you’re not, I hope you have the courage to start all over again.”
